Kids in the System

22 Mar

As Andrew and I have started (and I seriously mean, just started) this journey of adoption, we are learning more and more about how the system works and the need of kids to be adopted.

Did you know….

Only 50% of kids who are in the foster system graduate from High School

75% of emancipated foster kids (those who have aged out of the system – turned 18) end up either homeless, on drugs, incarcerated, or dead within 2 years.

2% of foster kids go to college – 1% graduate.

The statistics are overwhelming, I know.  Nonetheless, as Christians, we are not just called, we are commanded to take care of these orphans.

How are we doing as a church at this?

This is one of my major heartbreaks! Spending time with these kids and seeing the need is so completely overwhelming. Can you imagine not having a family? Remember being 18 and graduating from high school…could you imagine being put out into the world with no parents? I am so grateful for you two, for seeing Jesus’ words as a command, not an option. Love you!

    Hi Becca!
I found your blog from heather whittaker’s blog awhile ago but I’ve never commented. My heart is giddy that you guys are choosing to adopt through foster care, my husband and I also cannot conceive naturally and choose to adopt through foster care. we’ve been fostering for 3 1/2 years, and although it can be very tough, its also the most amazing thing to watch these child thrive. Our original plan was to adopt but now we simply foster and are currently loving that! We are from Riverside but currently live in Ventura, and we have only heard GREAT things about the Riverside county agency! I remember the first time I read the statistics above and I literally got nauseous.

&& so you know—-> DONT EVER say you could never do something, because you are right- without GOD you cant do, but with him you can! it truly is funny how God humbles us & through him we are able to love the unloved! funny how when i shared my story with you you thought i was joking. hopefully your experience is a blessing & God humbles you through this. The foster care system is not for those who judge in any way.
