4 Points? Are you kidding me?

16 Aug

Last school year, we had one goal:  get our test scores up to 800.  It is how the government measures the proficiency of the students at a school.

Everything we did was about preparing our students for the state test at the end of the year.  If we made 800, then we had a chance to get rid of our dreaded “Program Improvement” status.  (That is how schools get labeled by the government if we don’t meet the required test scores, regardless of socioeconomic status, English Learners, or Special Ed students.  They don’t even care if the school is improving, just that they meet the numbers they want to see).

Anyway, we worked so hard last year.  The students worked so hard.  Everyone was optimistic.  800!  We can do it!

Andrew told me he ran into my principal the other day at the grocery store and he shared our results:

796!

We improved SOOO much from the previous year.  I am so proud of our students.  The downer is that the government doesn’t care about growth.  796 is amazing for our students.

Still not good enough.  I am sad.
